Creation of INRAE 's first Associated Partnership Laboratory

The creation of INRAE's first Assoicated Partnership Laboratory: dedicated to innovation with Excilone

Due to the major challenges facing our societies, expectations of research are growing. To respond through real innovation to the industry's and society's problems, the intensifiction of interactions between public resarch with companies is a key. By placing innovation as one of the pilars in its strategy for the next 10 years [1], at the beginning of 2021, INRAE has launched a new type of partnership with social-economic actors: the Associated Partnership Laboratory. Thus, on the basis of a common roadmap for 5 years, the partnership will allow INRAE and Excilone to share their material and human resources around a co-conceived research and technological programme in the field of microgenomics. This is a new type of partnership for INRAE that is both flexible and adaptable whose objective is to accelerate the development of new innovations.

Partners since 2011 in the field of Microgenomics, INRAE[2] and the company Excilone, specialized in image analysis and biomolecule contents, had already opened a service together for the analysis of micro-samples as part of the @BRIDGe[3] core facilities dedicated to the genomics of domestic animals. INRAE and Excilone are therefore consolidating their partnership by making a joint commitment in 2021 to an Associated Partnership Laboratory (LPA). This type of partnership between a public research institute and an industrial partner will make it possible to jointly conduct a research programme in which the public laboratory and the private partner, which are complimentary, provide human means (scientists, engineers or technicians), competencies and know-how, and technological equipment. This programme is materialized by a joint laboratory agreement. It is flexible to create and evaluate and can be easily dissolved or renewed.

With the creation of this Assoicated Partnership Laboratory (LPA), INRAE and Excilone commit themselves to the following:

  • Defining common scientific and technological objectives and sharing approaches and scientific method for mutual enrichment;
  • Enhancing their complimentarity in accordance with strategic plans or projects;
  • Providing an optimal use of expertise and material means while favoring the mutualization of equipment;
  • Jointly responding to calls-for-proposals and building projects to implement the Research Program.

Joint Laboratories at the heart of INRAE's policies for innovation

This new type of partnership presents several advantages for INRAE and its partner. For INRAE, this will make the emergence of new research subjects possible and will provide access to equipment, competencies or data belonging to its socio-economic partner. For the partner, they have access to scientific excellence, to cutting-edge equipment and differentiation and competitiveness through innovation. For both partners, the results of the work may be published separately or together depending on the subjects but also to joint valorizations by filing for patents notably.

This first Partnership Laboratory opens the way to a new type of collaboration we hope to extend to our different fields of research at INRAE.
