A film on milk quality: when genes get involved
This short film was produced for the Open House days,organised on September 18 and 19 2010 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Jouy-en-Josas research center. It was financed by INRA (GABI unit), the CNIEL (French National Interprofessional Center for Dairy Productions), France Génétique Elevage and the Institut de l'Elevage (French Breeding Institute).


Both consumers' and society's expectations change: benefits for health, production conditions, impact on the environment... These are all new issues. Milk has numerous natural advantages. The dairy industry and researchers must provide answers and facts for these new stakes: control of the composition of milk, health value of its components, traceability, sustainable development ... Within this context, the different actors of the bovine, caprine and ovine dairy industry, in collaboration with INRA, launched a program in 2008 for a period of five years, PhénoFinlait, on the study of the composition of milk from French populations and on factors of variation. PhénoFinlait is aimed at providing breeders and the food industry the tools and references necessary to face the challenges of today's industry.
