The eBIS technology unit, accredited in 2017, involves three partners: INRAE-GABI, the French Breeding Institute and Allice all within the G2B team.

This technology unit (UMT in French) was created following the previous UMR 3G that involved three partners for the establishment of genomic selection in all populations. Genomic selection has completely revolutioinized selection in cattle. The new project is a continuation of the previous one but integrates new challenges in selection associated with global developments and also regulatory changes.

This UMT, accredited in 2017, involves three partners, INRAE-GABI, the French Breeding Institute (Idele) and Allice, all within the Bovine Genetics and Genomics Team of GABI. Its project concerns the major developments expected both in terms of methodology but also new applications of genomic testing of breeding animals. It is adapted to the major decisions in progress with the application of the European Zootechnical Regulations (RZUE) in November 2018, which significantly modified the regulatory missions of INRAE and Idele in the field of bovine breeding.

The program includes four thematic areas

  • Theme 1 concerns first, bovine genetic evaluations and their evolution within current regulations;  and then all actions to be developed to prepare transitions towards a new framework that will be as efficient and satisfactory as possible for its users. Then the activities of theme 1 will be pursued, facilitating exchanges with the future shared evaluation service.
  • Theme 2 treats different methodological challenges of genomic selection. A major effort will be made to use sequencing data: consideration of causal mutations, including non additive effects of genes in the predictions and genetic evaluation of cross-breeding, but also the analysis of the impact of epigenetic phenomena in predictions. This theme will also treat other methodological challenges like the generalization of single step analysis or prediction of genotype x environment interactions.
  • Theme 3 is dedicated to the genetic analysis of traits with two types of studies: 1) the study of phenotypes that present big challenges for the sustainability of bovine production; priority work relates to feed efficiency, methane production, animal health and product quality. 2) the search for genetic anomalies and important genes, based on the National Observatory for Bovine Anomalies (ONAB), and on detections issued directly from sequence analysis.
  • Finally, theme 4 concerns tools for decision-making in genomic selection, in particular on the intra herd level in a framework where most females are genotyped. Studies are underway to revise breeding plans, minimizing inbreeding and avoiding anomalies; to predict the future career of animals and help in decision-making for a reformed policy and reproduction; adapting predictions to the production systems while considering both the different selection objectives and the genotype x environment interactions.

This theme is naturally part of the INRAE Genomic Selection Metaprogramme which is a source of multidisciplinary activities, sharing between species or even reigns, and of international openness, towards the North and the South.
